How to implement proper milk quality KPI’S on a farm?

Key Performance Indicators for Milk Quality are crucial for proper follow-up on our farms and to obtain the greatest benefit from it and to ensure the animals’ welfare. But not all indicators work in all types of herd and we need to know which are the best for a proper follow-up. Luis Pinho (DVM, PhD) gives you some key points on how to implement KPI’s correctly.

In the video, Luis Pinho introduces us to the use of Key Performance Indicators for milk quality. The main information shared is intended to help us with:

  • The sources of information: We need to organize the incredible amount of data into understandable and relevant points: the Key Performance Iindicators.

  • How to manage data: We need to select what is useful and reliable data and organize and analyze it using IT tools.

  • Udder health KPIs: These KPIs will be mostly divided according to whether they relate to clinical or subclinical mastitis. Dry period KPIs can also be generated as well as KPIs relating to the calving period.

  • KPI analysis: This can provide very useful information for comparison of different groups, production stages, etc., so farm- specific critical points are identified, and targeted corrective actions are implemented.

  • Benefits: The main benefits of implementing KPI analysis are related to identifying critical points and also following up the effectiveness of the corrective actions.

  • Potential risk: KPIs are only as good as the quality of the data that generates them.

It ’is important to highlight the importance of the incidence of both clinical and subclinical mastitis to the health of the herd and to Milk Quality performance, controlling the clinical cases, treatments, and also the somatic cell counts.

In addition to the video, you can find extra resources, such as a summary of the KPIs and a spread sheet you can use to do calculations, that Luis Pinho has specially prepared to help you get started on the use of this interesting tool.
