Milking machine – advanced

The importance of working with liners, vacuum and pulsation. The “triad” of milking system is composed by the liners, vacuum level and pulsation, that in some cases can originate inflammatory response, without the involvement of bacterial infection – the milking stress.  


In this course, it will be approached how to balance a good teat end health with a fast and effective milking by manipulating the “triad”.

How to impact milk quality on AMS farm?

Satisfactory udder health can be achieved in all robotic systems, but requires unique control measures in addition to those used in conventional systems. This course gives those working with AMS herds the tools to identify, understand and mitigate the specific risk factors for udder health. This will allow both cow health and milk quality to be maintained at acceptable levels in both new and converted AMS farms.

TOM GREENHAM

Tom is a director in Advance Milking Limited, a consultancy service for all aspects of udder health and milking machine optimisation.

Advance Milking provide specialist advice for dairy farms in the UK and Ireland, as well as working around the world to deliver training and independent support to dairy engineers, veterinary surgeons, and other industry stakeholders. Research is a growing area of work, with Advance Milking currently leading studies on milking efficiency and udder health, as well as providing independent advice for novel product development.

Tom’s background is in veterinary medicine, with ten years in dairy practice prior to setting up Advance Milking in 2017 with colleague Dan Humphries. A growing interest in udder health and milking performance led to specialisation in this area, providing advanced advice on the milking machine’s impact on mastitis, milk quality and milking efficiency.

RAFAEL ORTEGA

Rafael Ortega has over 20 years’ experience in Milk Quality.

He has a degree in Veterinary Science from the Veterinary Faculty in Córdoba (Spain) and is a member of various specialist groups such as the National Mastitis Council or the Milking Machine Committee.

He has participated in numerous research projects and also on different technical publications on milk quality, most notably the book entitled “Guia solomamitis del asesor en calidad de leche” [Solomamitis guide for the milk quality consultant] which he co-wrote with 4 European colleagues, and which was issued in 2016.

He is currently responsible for the Regional Technical Services Ruminants Business Unit at HIPRA for Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

ORIOL FRANQUESA

Consultant vet with 20 years of experience in milk quality (Q-LLET), Spain.

Qualified with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 1999 and further specialized in Udder health and management with a masters in “Advisement and Management of Dairy Cattle Farms” from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2004.
