Bovine Mastitis: Improving the udder health with vaccination

Fazenda Morro dos Ventos, is a farm located in Carambeí (Paraná, Brazil). The owners are Jacco e Simone Erkel, and they are managing 430 dairy cows! With a 3 milking per day routine, they produce around 36 litres per cow per day. With that good numbers, they needed to improve the udder health in their farm, so at the end of 2018 they starting to use vaccination against bovine mastitis.

Interview with Simone Erkel, Brazil

Bovine Mastitis: vaccination in brasilian farm

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Mastitis is the most costly disease in dairy cattle so we have to use the right solutions to help us manage this problem. ”

. . . . . . . . . . . .

1- What made you start vaccinating against mastitis, in the context of a milk quality programme?

We had a very high incidence of bovine mastitis, which caused huge expenditure on antibiotics. The aim of vaccination was to improve the immune status of the animals, making the herd more resilient when challenged.

2- What caught your attention in the case of STARTVAC?

What HIPRA offers is very different to other companies, the company is not only focused on sales but also provides technical support, meaning that HIPRA  delivers a complete package: product + high quality technical support.

STARTVAC is a very good vaccine as it is effective against clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis, that together with the support, convinced us.

3- What benefits have you observed when using STARTVAC ?

Monthly clinical cases rate before vaccination 15%
Bulk tank SCC 450,000
Monthly clinical cases rate after vaccination 4%
Bulk tank SCC 320,000

The number of clinical mastitis cases reduced significantly, not only the case numbers but also the severity has decreased.

So, my spending on antibiotics and milk losses in the withdrawal period decreased a lot. Besides, it helped in the control of the SCC.

4- What would you say to a farmer who is starting to use TOPVAC in his herd?

It is a very good tool, to be included in a milk quality plan, together with environmental improvements, milking routine, and milking machine maintenance.

Mastitis is the most costly disease in dairy cattle so we have to use the right technologies/solutions to help us manage this problem.
